Erasmuslaan 9 is part of the Centraal Museum in Utrecht and one of four model houses designed by the architect Gerrit Th. Rietveld, which are icons of Dutch modernism. Among them is the Rietveld Schröder House, an icon of the city and one of the landmark works of the De Stijl Group, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The gallery is housed in one of these four buildings designed by the renowned architect Gerrit Rietveld. It works exclusively with artists of geometric abstraction, whose practice refers to the core aesthetic principles of the De Stijl movement (Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg). Dutch geometric abstraction, rooted in the ideas of Russian Constructivism (including Kazimir Malevich), draws much of its inspiration from the Dutch landscape.
